WISTFUL WANGANUI.
How it Strains for City Style. WANGANUI is perhaps the. brightest of oar provincial towns, and if you forget that Wanganui is a city the Wangauui people will regard you with a jaundiced glare. Wanganui is always straining, to work up to a true city style. That ambition affects every man and woman in Wanganui. They go to sleep : devising schemes for running "Wellington clean out of the metropolitan contest, and they get up .determined by hook or crook to make Auckland feel .sick. .- .' ' Even the milkmen have that fever. This week there is a story of a milk vendor who adulterated on large city lines— forty per cent, of water. This probably beats the "Wellington record, and it's certain that Auckland can't look at it. Probably if the daring innovator had put in eighty per cent, of .water they'd have made him mayor and got up a subscription to erect a statue of him. : ' .- * ■ -
