Rowing Notes.

By Tingle.

M UCH disappointment was manifest at the Star Boating Club when it became known that H. O. Barron, of the senior four, would be unable to obtain the nt&oessaTy leave to attend the championship regatta. Although a well-conditioned substitute was tried/ it was found to be advisable to cancel the ■arews' engagements. Repeated efforts were made to secure Barron's leave, but bi*<g superior officer stood his .ground, and convinced' those who saw him that the request could not possibly be' granted. ■Swimming sports will soon be the order of the day at the Star and Wellington' Clubs. Entries for the many events aTe now open, and have had so far a satisfactory response. These

functions are ladies' days, therefore haying their social as well as- athletic significance. ' Firemen as a rule do not wear dancing or tennis shoes, and the one that walked ?,long the Ohriatchurch Union Rowing Club's best-and-best four on the "Maori" the other night was no exception to the rule. His boot® were of the "Dreadnought" type, and their nails and general imprints sank deep, and made a most t: nfavourable impression. Dick Arnst was in town last week with the Australian team which left for home on Friday; 21st. It is understood that Dick's next move is towards Akaroa. ; Probably the next event to be decided at the Wellington Club will be in singles. About a fortnight ago the Star Race Committee picked the pair-oar crews. So far very few of the seniors haive been seen at work. A few of the juniors have been on the water, and toi them I must proffer a little ad yice: — Ritchie and Mason.—The latter would do well to carefully adjust bis blade work. Dean and Feeney.—Bow .does not hold his slide before the catch. Robiesen and Beaumont.—Both of these men should square their shoulders when catching. Dudley and Hack worth.—Time is dragged. Robinson and McKay.—Robinson should make the stroke more snappy and determined. The new Star maiden crew (Joe Stan sell. Stan Butt, Jim Bennett, and Holmes, were highly approved by the members of that club. The "Wellington' Rowing Club were to' start their pair-oar events this week, and I will give an account of the racing later.

Our compliments to the South British. Insurance Company, which sends along the usual_ neat and handy wall calendar. It is a pleasant reminder that > the South British is alive and kicking. Parsons and Whittemore, of New York, also send us a nice calendar.
