The second distance (100 yds) for the Wellington Club's three-guineas trophywas got off at the Thorndon Baths on \Vednesday (the sth), under favourable circumstances. A crowd of spectators were present, and witnessed one of the finest 100 yds races that has been determined at the baths. It resulted in a win for J. T. Gray (Bsec), F. Roberts (Ssec) 2, and W. E. Rawson "(6sec) 3. Messrs. Roberts and Gray now tie for the trophy, with. 8 points each. The final distance was to have been decided on Wednesday last. Through inclement weather on Saturday the Swifts' Club were obliged to postpone their carnival, which was to have taken place at the Thorndon Baths. An impromptu 50yds race, however, was arranged, and fifteen competitors took part. Following is the result : — Gardiner (Bsec) 1, Levinsohn (Ssec) 2, Johnson (ssec) and Stone (ssec) dead heat 3. Afc the conclusion of the race the committee met, and decided to hold the sports on Saturday next. I select the following to fill places : — Maiden, Gray, Murdoch, and Neilson ; plunge, Churchward, Hamer; 100 yds, Stone, Rawson, and Wilkes ; ladies' bracelet (50yds), Cooper, Ballinger, and Murdoch ; neat header, Johnson and Blacklock; 220 yds, Freyberg, Richardson, and Styles; boys' race, Innes and Freyberg. Roberts is conceding Wilkes "2sec m the 100 yds. The first of the New Zealand ehawpionsliips will take place at Christchurch on the 20th instant, when the 220 yds will be decided. The authorities of the Auckland Club talk of sending Tyler to represent them. A meeting between Tyler and some of tho Southern cracks should be interesting Hamilton, Wellington's late champion, will, 1 expect, also be competing. The quarter-mile championship ''amateur) of Scotland was decided at Paisley in October, and was won by J. Edwards in 6min 22sec. The amateur championships of America were decided at Travers Island, New York, on 29th September. X C. Shafter won the 100 yds in lmin 5 3-ssec (breaking the record by about 3sec), the 220 yds in 3min 7 1-osec, and the quar-ter-mile in 6min 52 4-osec. W. Gf. Douglas won the half-mile in 14min 43 3-ssec, and T. W. Van Cleaf the mile in 34min and 3-osec.
The French have e;ot level at last n ith their enemies, and avenged Sedan — at football. On Sunday, October 14bh, there uas played, for the first t'me, a Rugby football match between a German and a French team — the former from the Frankfurter Football Club. The French won by 27 point* to 17.
