DEPARTURE OF TROOPS.
The head-quarters of lI,M. GBth .Regiment were embarked on board the transport ‘Ballarat’ on Wednesday afternoon, and left on Thursday, for England. The men, numbering 270, were marched from their quarters at Otahuhu during the morning, preceded by the regimental band, playing popular airs. They were halted
in tbe Albert Barracks for refreshment, and afterwards inarched through tbe town to Queen-street Wharf, where they embarked in cargo-boats for the vessel. The following officers embarked for England in this vessel, which sailed about six o’clock iu tbe evening : Colonel Greer, C.8., (in command) ; Dr Best, Surgeonmajor (in medical charge) ; Captain J. 11. C. Seymour, and Captain A. II Tucker; Lieutenant and Adjutant C. Covey ; Lieutenant L. Bolden, Lieutenant W. 11. F. Palmer, Lieutenant W. A. Ray ; Ensigns W. S. Greene, W. F. Woodward, and C. E. Ilderton ; Mrs. Colonel Greer and Mrs. Best, families and servants; tbe bandmaster, wife, and four children ; 3 sergeants, 8 naval invalids, 12 soldiers’ wives and. 24 children, and 270 men, making a total of 348.
A company, numbering upwards of f)0 men, remain in quarters at Otabubu, owing to tbe want of space on board these vessels to convey tbe entire regiment, Tbe company left behind are in charge of Brevit-major Fitzgerald, and Sergeant Fawdry, and will be despatched by first vessel following.
