ELECTION INTELLIGENCE.
ONEHUNGA ELECTION. A meeting of the electors of Onehunga was held at the Alechanics Institute on Saturday last, to take into consideration matters affecting the approaching election in that town. Air. College having been voted to (he chair, the business commenced by Air. Gallangher addressing the meeting and giving his reason for so doing. In the course of Ids observations the speaker twitted Air. Lundou for some remarks which he had made on the hustings and stated at the same time that he was totally unfit to -represent .them. Air. O’Rorke next addressed the meeting and explained his principles, after which Air. Lundon defended himself, and stated that although once convicted he bad been pardoned. When asked by Air. Gallangher what Ids views were upon the question of Separation Air. Lundou refused to answer, saying that he would only explain his opinions to those who intended to vote for him. Ultimately, after great 'confusion, the meeting broke up pledging itself to support Air. O’Rorke. Yesterday was fixed for the polling for the respective candidates for Onehunga, Air. O’Rorke and Air. Lundou. Considerable excitement was manifested from an early hour, and large numbers of electors drove in from Auckland to record their votes in favour of their respective candidates. At 11 o’clock Air. Lundon came forward to the Returning officer and informed him that it was his intention to withdraw from tiie contest. On this fact becoming known tiie electors. expressed great approbation, and we nre glad that Air. Lundon had the good sense to withdraw, though it would have been a more graceful act on Ids part had lie retired without going to the poll. At eleven o’clock Air, O’Rorke was 47 a-hcad.
THE PENSIONER SETTLEMENTS. AVn are glad to learn that there is to be no contest for the Pensioner Settlements, Mr. AlcGec having retired from ihe contest. On Saturday the following formal notice was sent to Captain Syuionds: “To the Returning Olllcer of the Electoral District of the Pensioner Settlements. “ 1, the undersigned, do hereby give notice that I withdraw my name as a candidate at the election to lie held on the 19th day of February, 18GG, of a member of the House of Representatives for the electoral district of the Pensioner Settlements. “(Signed) Richard AlcGkk, “Signed in presence of A.
