CANTERBURY.

Ts» news from this province, received by the 4 Prince Alfred,'does not contain much interesting matter., Much discussion was going on in the local journals on the subject of the action of Mr. Aicken, Provincial Engineer, against the Superintendent antf Executive. An accident occurred in Lyttelton harbor on Monday night, the 29th inst., resulting in the loss of three lives. It appears that a little before midnight a boat belonging to the barge ' Glasgow'put off for that craft, but somehow was capsized, and the master and three men, who were in her, precipitated Into the water. Thdr cries for help were heard by a man named Stout, who put off at once and managed to save one of the men—the master (J. Homershaw). and two men (Duncan Slight and J. Chambers) were, however, 105t.,. The ' Geelong,'from Lyttelton to Dunedin, arrived at the latter place on .the 20th, as reported by telegraph on that day. The Lyttelton Chronicle has ceased to exist, for reasons connected with the monetary arrangements, between the - proprietors and the Bank of New Zealand. The proprietors were about to movei to Hokitika.

A petition has been presented by the Batepayers Mutual Protection Society, to the Superintendent, praying that he will cause a bill to be introduced at the forthcoming session of the General Assembly to remedy the defects in the City Council ordinance A Provincial Government Gazette was issued on the 17th. It notifies the resignation of William Rolleston, Esq., as Provincial Secretary, and the appointment of Edward Jollie, E-q., to the office ; the appointment of the Hon. John Hall to be a Commissioner of Waste Lands, net William Rolleston, Esq, resigned; the appointment of Joseph Brittan, Esq., to be a. member of the Board Of Education vice William Rolleston, Esq., resigned. Complaints are made of the transfer of the telegraph from Lyttelton to Christchurch, from the Provincial to the General Government, who have deprived the latter city of the important ■hipping news, that .was transmitting by this means, by not allowing the messages to be sent.
