MONGONUI.

(from our own correspondent.)November 14. It is seldom anything occurs in this quiet neighbourhood worth recording. Last Friday, however, brought forth something- amusing. It appears that a meeting was called at the Donnybrook Hotel to meet aud ? hear the opinion of our member before his departnre for the House of Assembly. It is well known the meeting was suggested by the member and one or two of hi» hangers on, for the purpose of condemning the policy of Sir George Grey, and upholding that of the late Ministry, as well as to.make it appear that the Northern District was in an unsettled state occasioned by the misconduct of the natives. The affair was altogether a total failure, not more than eight or nine voters

present, and two or three non-voters. If the meeting had been called for a good purpose the numbers would have-been at least sixty or seventy. I may as well say the settlers here generally speaking'-quite believe in the Governor’s proceedings, and have no doubt he will vindicate his case in a satisfactory way when the time comes, —our member not being popular in the North, should any opposition come forward’ at the next election he might be place! in a position to enable him to pay more attention to his pilotage duties. In conclusion, I must say the natives in the district are quite reconciled to the present Government management, and conduct themselves very peaceably.
