COMMERCIAL RECORD.
CANTED BURY. A meeting of consignees per barque Countess of Seafield was held yesterday afternoon at the rooms of the Chamber of Commerce. About twenty gentlemen were present, with Captain Danvers, the master sf the vessel, at whose invitation the meeting was called. Mr. Symington was in the chair. Mr. Buckley recounted the facts of the case, which were that when within a few weeks’ sail of Tasmania, the vessel encountered heavy weather, and was swept by a sea, which carried off nine of the crew, and damaged the ship considerably. The vessel was taken into Hobart Town, where the captain, who was also sole owner, was advised by Lloyd’s agents to repair the ship, Avhich he did, at a cost of £2700, raising the money on bottomry at 15 per cent., and the Bank of New Zealand here was in possession of the bond. The captain was without funds. The freighi due was about 900, which, though hypothecated, would be available or the bond. Meantime the consignees could not touch their goods, and the question was what was to be done. The vessel was insured against all risks for £3600, but she could not be sold. There was no Vice-Admiralty Court in the Province. He suggested that the consignees should appoint trustees and take up the bond by payment of a percentage on the cargo. Some objection was taken to the proposal, and an adjournment was suggested. Finally, a committee of seven gentlemen was appointed to consider and report upon the subject by Friday next (to-morrow). —Lyttelton Times, September 1.
