CAMP ALEXANDRA.
September 6, 1864. We have had a great number of civilian and other visitors to the Camp during the past week j every steamer brings either new settlers or visitors. Every one is on the gm'vive, sports have been established, aud there have also been two more stores opened for the benefit of the men. On Saturday last a Cricket Match was played betweeu the men on either side of t?>e river; this, although not much note is made of i-fc, is the first of a series that will be held during the coming season.
The steamer fVaipa, W. J. Young & Co., proprietors, made its first trip to Alexandra on Sunday morning. It is much to be regretted that it had not been up here before this, as the river is begiuuing to get low,*and very few steamers are even able to get as far as Te Ron, in summer time. A very painful circumstance occurred near here about nine days ago. One of the men of the 2nd Waikatos stationed here, was proceeding ou pass to Auckland to see his wife, who had come from Napier to meet him in Auckland, and when crossing Maugapiko Creek, about a mile and a half from here, he unfortunately got upset in a canoe, and having his rifle aud accoutrements ou him, their weight sank him immediately. Siuce then several searches have been made, but the body was not found until Sunday last, when it was picked up by a party of men belonging to Mr. Hyde s snagging party. The funeral took place this day with military honors.
The buildings are progressing veryquiekly, and very soon we shall have bo.h men aud officers in woodeu huts, when the men intend visiting Auckland, Bec, and to iutroduce their wives and families to the genial climate aud soil of Alexandra.
