The "awful tale of an eel, which has created so much excitement in Ballnarat during the week, has come to a conclusion. The mystery is thus unravelled by the Star: —" The cause of so many eels making their appearance of late at the virions standpipes throughout the tojrn can be, to a certain extent, explained by the fact that on Wednesday a hole, between three and four inches square, was discovered in the irratin ■» which covers the mouth of the main pipe at Lake Wendouree. The hole presented the appearance of having been gnawed through by the fish. The glaring is very finely perforated, so that the eels must have passed through the hole, or else, as has been supposed by some, through the small apertures ?hen very young, and remained in the pipes ever since, but this latter idea is one which seems to possess too much, originality to be taken as correct."
