Home for Orphans and Destitute Children. THE want of an Asylum in Auckland for the maintenance and training of Orphans and Destitute Children has been much felt ior'sorhe years .past. An Orphan Asylum in connexion with St. Paul's Parish was opened in the year 1860, and has been continued since that time, but its sphere cooperation has been very limited, being confined exclusively to one Parish in Auckland. The benefits which the poor children have received from St. Paul's Orphan Asylum have been manifest to all who have visited them. Several of these children were taken off the streets, being cared for by no one, having neither home nor parents, or what is still worse, being abandoned by their parents. They have now a comfortable home, where they receive all the attention and kindness of a mother, being under the care of a matron who treats them as her own children. They are well fed and clothed and carefully instructed in Day and Sunday Schools. The happy faces of these once destitute children, their cleanliness, their ready obedience, their correct and orderly conduct, bear ample witness to the good which they derive from the home which Providence has provided for them. There is indeed no duty more imperative on the Christian Church than that of becoming the nursing mother of those little ones, whom death has deprived of their parents, or whose parents have cruelly abandoned them. It has been in contemplation therefore for some months past to open an Asylum for Orphans and Destitute Children on a scale much more extended than that of the Institution now in operation. It is proposed that the management of this new Asylum shall be in connexion with the Church of England. An institution of this nature should be like a well ordered and united family under one head, but it would be difficult, if not impossible, to manage it satisfactorily or to give a definite religious training to the young children received into it, if various systems of religious training were to be admitted, and if the matron were to be charged with the difficult task of carrying out these different systems among the children committed her care. But although its management will be in connexion with the Church of England, yet the institution will be open for the reception of all orphans and destitute children without regard to their religious denomination. . . An eligible site in Symonds Street, immediately beyond the Church of England Burial-ground, con tainining half an acre or more, has been offered by the Bishop of New Zealand for the requisite buildings of the new Asylum, but until the Committee can decide upon the most suitable place for its location, it is proposed to hire a house for the purpose, that in which the orphans are now lodged being much too small. It is hoped that this charitable object will meet with the sympathy and support of all charitably disposed persons, and especially of parents, who can appreciate the many advantages which their own children enjoy. An account will be opened at the Bank of New Zealand under the head " Home for Orphans and Destitute Children," where contributions will also be received. Committee of Management:— Mr. Fendelow, Rev. It also proposes to take those children as day boarders whose parents have suitable homes for their accommodation at nights. It is fully expected that an eligible site for" the proposed building, will shortly be secured, when an appeal will be made to the Citizens of Auckland, who will be waited upon for Subscriptions to aid in this good work.
