To the Electors of the Southern Division. GENTLEMEN, —Although my name (amongst others) had appeared in one of the Local papers os likely to be brought forward to represent the Southern Division, in the Provincial Council, it was only on Friday the 11th inst., that I became aware of my having been nominated. When I agreed to become a candidate for your Division it was with the understanding that if returned I would not become a party either one way or the other, to foster those Provincial squabbles which have already brought free institutions almost into contempt. Some of our Provincial Ordinances require amendation to adapt them to the reqiremcnts of a civilized community. Having criticised some of those laws through the Local papers, I felt it would be shirking a duty were I to refuse to come forward when requested to do so by gentlemen who had assisted in the making of those laws, and who I believe are as anxious to see them amended as myself. Yours respectfully, WILLIAM ATKINS. Tamaki, November 12th, 1859. Electors of the Northern Division. GENTLEMEN, —As I have made no personal canvass, nor have I asked personally a single vote, I trust therefore that no Gentleman Elector of your division will put it down to indifference on my part, and say that his vote was not worth asking for. You have already three representatives on the North Shore, aud one of them using his little influence for three of his neighbours (candidates), I ask you is that fair representation for your division, I hope therefore that you will this day record your votes in favour of one who has no personal interests to serve, no office or situation to seek, no motive whatever in view but the welfare of your division, and the prosperity of the Province of Auckland, X am Gentlemen, Your obedie t servant, A.
