THE TWO AWAKINGS.
A PSALM OF SPRING. Rosie Spring hath chnrge to array Th’ espoused Earth with flowers; The rainbow is her highway, And the spears of her host, the showers. Now, fearing not for cold The baby buds be born; And the gorse hath his mantle of gold. And his suowy robe, the thorn. Uprose the venturous bee And spread his filmv sail; Compass nor chart hath he, Vet his voyage shall not fail. And the right ancient Sea With huge unsleeping eye, As a child lay placidly While the beaming Spring past by: Vet no pulse of life, I ween, Went down through the twinkling waves To the white bone- that lie unseen In the weed of their ocean graves ; And the stranded ships that lay In onay caverns deep. Knew not the holiday That winds and waters keep. The weary birds came back • From many a distant shore, But no spirit finds a track ; Our dead return no mure. On the sepulchral mound Flowers ope d their gentle eyes. Anil the murium lug bee came round For his pleasant merchandize: Bui no sleeper there did wake. Nor foot nor vestment stirr'd ; To bid that slumber break. Sunny Spring could not speak tire word. Yet that Wokd shall surely be; For that waking, aye we mist: Till then keep thy dead, thou -Sea ! Till then. Earth 1 hoard thy dust. True hearts where Christ had room A goodlier Spring shall see, Wh- > the barren grave shall b'oo.n, Da.iih lose h;s victory. And ho to Earth gave o'er Their precious things to ke”a. Or of household loves great store Lost in the seething deep: These shall be theirs again Where Life alone harh sway, Nor serpent is nor pain. Nor tears, nor death, alway. j. hj, r. Auckland,
