Nbw Zkai.andeii Office, Auckland, August 31st, 195.5. The past week has been one of even unusual dullness. From a long continuance of the most charming weather, partaking much more of the mildness and brilliancy of summer than of the dreariness of midwinter, we have been suddenly plunged into all the iscomforts of rainy, blustery, but seasonable weather. Since Sunday afternoon, a constant succession of wintry weather has been experienced, and there has been a copious fall of the rain which had for some time been anxiously looked for. The season has proved a most favourable one for the agriculturist. The country is said to be in beautiful order,.and there is a breadth of land already under tilth, far surpassing in extent any previous year's culture. The only arrivals of the week have been the schooners Grafton and St. Martin, both with general cargoes, from Melbourne. The departures have been the schr. Fancy, with 300 sacks of flour, for Sydney. And the Drover, with 4'J7 bags and 1533 kits of potatoes, 77 bags of oats, 51 bags bran, and 5 casks oil, for Melbourne. The importations coastwise, have been $,850 bushels wheat, o'BO bhls. maize, 3,ooolbs.and 6 casks salt pork, I ton bacon, 12 head of cattle, 1 ton potatoes, 46 cvvt. flax, 1J tons gum, 3J tuns oil, 1,050 posts and rails, 48,000 shingles, l Z 2 tons firewood, 4'.',000 feet sawn timber, and 30 cases tobacco. Messrs. Newman and Buckland had'an extensive sa'e of cattle, at Newmarket, on Tuesday. The stock was chiefly young, and from the celebrated herd of Mr. Thomas Cawkewell. There was a good attendance, and a spirited competition ; more particularly for the well-bred yeatling heifers, which commanded large prices. The proceeds were highly satisfactory, and indicate a very healthy feeling among the settlers ; for although the terms of'sale were three months for approved bills, more than three fourths of the purchases were paid in cash. The amount realised was £Bl4 ss. Thirty-two heifers averaged £ls Ss. 3d. per head; the highes) price being £'2!) 10s. and the lowest £lO 5s Another lot of fourteen heifers averaged £7 3s. 7d. per head ; the highest fetching £9 10s. and the lowest £5 ss. A bullock brought £i7, and fourteen wedders sold at 325. (id. per head. Messrs. Newman and lhickland had likewise a stock sale at Otahuhu on Thursday. The attendance of buyers was affected by the very stormy state of the weather, and the show of stock was correspondingly limited. The prices realized were fully on a par with previous sales. Four steers averaged 110 is. Sd. per head. Three heifers averaged £ll lSs. 4. A cow sold foi £l3 10s. and an Ox ior .CIS 10s.
