THE WAIHUKU COMMISSION.
To the Editor of the New-Zealaner. Sir, —As my time is much occupied, I cannot eater into a consideration of the report of the above Commission so fully as would enable me to examine and refute in detail all the principal objections urged against the portage line of communication. I beg leave, however, to call your attention to the fact that no data have as yet been obtained as the basis of any engineering opinion regarding the practicability, position, and expense of either a canal or trammel in the Waiuku districtAlthough the Commission have been nearly two months encaged, they have not made any preliminary plans, longitudinal and cross profiles, specifications or detailed estimates of the proposed works, the lines are but indistinctly located, without being staked out, levelled, or measured. ?<ot one of the distances they have given are correct, and consequently their estimates are absolutely without foundation. As tiie three gentlemen who composed the Commission call themselves Civil Engineers, they are supposed to he able to take levels. I ask, Why did they not do so ? They tell us of the amount a horse can draw (and even this is incorrect), hut don’t state the inclines to he encountered! They tell us of the splendid harbour they have discovered (well known for the last tenyenrs), but they don’t give us any plans or Intimates of the harbour works required there ! they tell us of a sketch in illustration of their Import, but upon enquiry at the office of the t'aste Land Board, I find it is not forthcoming ! E fact, sir, their report is a combination of assertions without one engineering fact to found them upon. In conclusion I may say that it behoves all the owners of land at Waiuku to actively oppose e «ry attempt to carry out the recommendation «this Commission, until at least reasonable inforaiatiou can be obtained to found an opinion winch cannot be refuted, I am, Sir, Your obedient servant, Waiuku. M July, 1855.
