NELSON.

From the Ac/so« Examiner. H.M S. Racehorse, from Wellington, arrived here on Sunday la^t, and came into harbor with the even ing tide. This is the first vessel of war, with the exception of the steamer Inflexible, that has ever ent ered Nelson Haven. The object of this visit appeal s to have been to clean and refit the vessel, and accordingly the guns and stores have been landed on Fifeshire island. On Wednesday, the vessel hciself was laid on shore that her bottom might be cleaned. We hope that Captain Sotheby will make known to the other commanders on the station, the facilities which our station affords for purposes of this nature. We believe the Racehorse will remain here two or three weeks. Major Richmond, accompanied by his daughter, arrived on Sunday last in the Racehorse, and has assumed the duties of Superintendant and Resident Magistrate. An official notice of the appointment, the first we have seen, will be found in our advertisingcolumn. Mr Sinclair our former Resident Magistrate has been superseded, but we hear that an offer was made him to continue Sheriff and Commissioner of the Court of Requests, at a salary of £100 ajear, but we believe it has been declined. If this is the case, we hope tne Registrar of Deeds will be required to do the business ot the Court of Request, at least until the duties of his own office should increase to an ex« tent to make this arrangement inconvenient. We hope no further unnecessary offices will be created, to entail heavy future expenses on the colony. We fear the Government is becoming 1 too lavish of its patronage, but it is more In the way of appointing new servants, than by properly remunerating old ones.—Examiner.
