POLICE OFFICE. Tuesday, 14th July, 1846.
John and William Patterson, of the Auckland Police, were charged, before T. Beckham, Esq., C. P . M., and T. R. Atkyns, Esq., J. P., Inspector of Police, with persuading and assisting a private of the 99th Regiment, named Henry Reavey, to deseit, nnd tor concealing him after desertion. It appeared from the evidence of Reavey, that the prisoner John Pallet son had held forth inducements of high wages to encouiage him to leave the army 5 that being ihus persuaded he left the tents at the Barrack on the morning of the 29th January last, and proceeded to Pattersons House, where facilities were afforded him for escape ; that he was conducted by William Patterson to a boat in Mechanics' Bay, where he embarked' and was landed on the North Shore ; that he worked some timethere for a man named Barnard Kane, until, by the very bad treatment he received from his employer, he was induced to return to Auckland, and give himself up to his regiment. Barnard Kane being sworn, his evidence went to prove that the appearance of the deseiter Ueavy, did not correspond with that of the man brought over lo him bv Patterson ; and this statement being conirddicted by the soldier, the case was dismissed. The ptisoners, however, w ere severely reprimanded by the Court. The Police Mag isti ate observing, that although the evidence was not sufficient to prove their guilt, yet he had no doubt but they wera both accessory to the man's desertion. The Patersons were in consequence dismissed from the Auckland Police Force.
