H R. Cretnay, agent. The Mary Catherine, 400 tons, was laid on in London, to sail on the 14th September, lor New Zealand. The French corvette, Le Rlun, 26 guns, Commodore Berard, arrived in the harbour on Wednesday last. She proceeds shortly to Tahiti, on her way to France. The brig Nelson on her passage to New Zealand, met with the following curious accident, the paiticiilars of which have been communicated 1o us by her commander, Captain Sedgu ick. While crossing the line, September 23id, in l<tt. Odeg. 27 mm. South, and long. lt> deg. 16 nun. West, at Oil. 30 m. p. m., the Nelson was stiuck by a large sword-fish in the counter, about 10 inches fronAhe stern post, the vessel then going at the rate of 6 knots per hour. The sword passed through her copper (which is uew) and a fourinch plank. The size of the hole was about tnrce inches. Some time elapsed before the hole was found out, and they were assisted in the discovery from the unusual noise made I y the rushing of so large a stream of water tlnougb the side of the vessel. Alter moving several tons of 6toies, &c.,they fortunately succeeded in stopping the leak Horn the inside. Had the fish struck uny other pait of the vessel, from the accident occurring at night, and the difficulty w Inch would have been experienced in getting at the leak, the Nelson would most probably have foundered.— Wellington Spectator.
