A public meeting was held to-day to consider the question of making, a presentation to the Hon, Sir James Allen in recognition of the manner- in which lie had carried out his onerous duties during the abspneo of the Right Hon, Mr Massey and. the Right Hon. Holland, who presided, said the movement was devoid of party interest, and he proceeded to -pay a tribute to Sir James Allen's services to the State and 1 the Empire, He also mentioned that' movements were afoot elsewhere to present Sir James Allen with some memento of his work for the Dominion, Mr A, E, G. Rhodes supported the proposal and moved; "That all present form themselves, into"ii committee to further the proposal."

Mr I'Y Shaddock condemned the movement, saying it was only courting failure. The rank and file of Christchurch residents would have nothing to do with it.
