SOUTH SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

MONTHLY MEETING,

The monthly meeting of thoj'ommittee was held in the school office on Tuesday evening at 7,30, Mr J, Bee, chairman, presided, and there were present Messrs J, McNarry, ,T. T, Calder, T, McQuin, T. Kidd, W. Lavender, R. Mahau, T. Hunter, and R, V„ Main, secretary,

A circular was received from the .Education Board notifying the granting to the committee for incidental expenses of an extra allowance as a special war pJiymcnt on the

average attendance, payable a 1: the end of September—Received with thanks. Also offering to the committee a number of trees and shrubs for planting in the school grounds from itho Dunediu Training College Nursery.—The matter was referred to a sub-committee to confer with the headmaster and staff, and re-, port to next meeting.

A letter was read from Mr E. Brown, acknowledging receipt ,of the committee's resolution in reference to to his late son, Sergeant D. F. Brown, He also sent an enlarged photograph of this heroic soldier.—lt was resolved to thank Mr Brown for his generous gift, and to have the photograph placed in Standard VI. room.

The headmaster reported for the month, showing (he roll number as 405, and the average attendance as 3GS.

Many of the pupils having expressed a desire In contribute to a fund in aid of the ohililron who suffered as a result of the recent air raid in London, i the headmaster and staff had made arrangements to collect subscriptions during the next fortnight, The following is a copy of a letter received Iby Mr YV. McLaren, headmaster:— Dear Sir,—lt would be a good thing if every child in the .school would take a penny every week for the little children who have suffered from the last air raid over London. Jf the other children would take their pennies we would be very pleased to take ours. — Signed, "Brother and Sister of the school."

The visiting committee reported everything being ; n a satisfactory condition about the school and grounds, considering the wet weather. iArr J. McNarry, on behalf of the boys' shooting team, reported that the re-erection of the rifle range for practice was being proceeded with and would be ready in a few weeks. lie also reported having purchased a new, up-to-date rifle, so that every tiling was going well for the coming competition for the, Challenge Cup.—A vote of thanks was passed to Mr McNarry for his interest in the boys' shooting loam. Accounts amounting to £3 2s 3d were passed for payment. Messrs AV. Lavender ami J. McNarry were appointed' a visiting committee for this month.
