SHIPMENT OF PRODUCE.

In reference to our suggestion that vigorous efforts should be made to obtain shipment of our produce, we are very pleased to learn that the need for action has been anticipated by our Chamber of Commerce. Having worked to such purpose in securing the declaration of Oamaru as a "shipping port," the executive had 110. mind to slacken in their efforts to main'tain the position, and, in consideration of the congested state of the local stores at the moment tilled with wool and produce, and the necessity for getting a clearance effected as soon as possible to

make way for other requirements, a few days ago the executive of Ihe Chamber formulated their approaches in the official direction, and lodged their representations towards the desired ends. We learn further that the executive have been on the tracks of a movements divert, through the medium of'railway concessions, the • shipment of Otago produce to other ports, and are doing all they know to balk such projects. We have also ascertained that- in conjunc v lion with the Associated Chambers of Commerce, the local Chamber is exercised over the possible effects of the proposed merger of -the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand with the P. and 0. Company, and the possible danger to the inter-eolonial and the coastal services of the Dominion, supporting the opinion that the Government should take such stops as it .deems advisable to safeguard the public interests in the matter. We are glad to find our | Chamber of Commerce so keenly alive to the interests of the port I of Oamaru, in all that tends to I the benefit and welfare of our dis- j triet and community.
