PHŒNIX BOWLING CLUB.

ANNUAL REPORT. Following is tho annual report of the Phoenix Bowling Club to be presented at the annual meeting of the club, which will be held in the pavilion at 8.30 tonight:—

¥our committee, in presenting the thirty-first annual report, wish to congratulate members on the very successful ueason experienced, the weather and attendance throughout the season being all that could bo desired.

Membership.—The roll shows a total of four.life members, fifty-three active member:!, nine honorary members, and five country members, which must be considered satisfactory considering the unsettled stato of affairs geiierally occasioned by war conditions. Mr Percy ijhaw, a recent member,, in at present on active service, and we wish him a safe and speedy return,

Finance,—'The club finances arc in a healthy condition, the cash credit balance being satisfactory. Club Competitions.— I The various competitions created considerable interest, and resulted as follows: Championship (singles, 'l'lios. llerron; Pheenix rinks, F, Crawshaw, J. D, Grant, W, Bailey and A, liiach (s); Phccnix pairs, I). 11. Thomson and Thos. Herron; colts' handicap singles, F. Crawshaw. Your committee wish to specially congratulate Mr T. llerron on his meritorious performance, this being the fourth occasion on which lie has proved himself the champion singles player, The trophies were presented to the "winners at the ladies' evening, and we take this opportunity of heartily thanking the doners, viz,: Messrs J, E, Broad, W. McLaren, A. Slater, W. Waddell, W. W, Bes"wick, Jasper Nicolls, A, Hamilton, and C. H. Church. A challenge rink competition for gold badges, which was introduced during the season, was enthusiastically taken up by the members, several close and interesting games being played. The present holders of the gold bagdes are W, 11. Hartley, G. L. Grenfell, J. Nicolls, and Jas. Bee (skip), The challenge silver badges for pairs was revived somewhat late in the season; nevertheless several matches were played, the present holders being Messrs J. Mitchell and W. Council. Inter-club Matches—Matches were played during the season against the Kia Toa, Tiniaru, Waimate, Palmcrston and Mcadowbank Clubs, all of which wcre ( keenly contested and thoroughly enjoyed by the members. The annual fixture with the St. Kilda Club was not held as usual on Labour Day, but we trust to have our friends with us again during the coming season, The annual match against the South Canterbury Club was played .at Waimate, and resulted in a ijillicr easy win for the Norlli Olago «Vnlrt', We are imlebled In those members who kindly placed I heir motor cars at Hie disposal of the players in connection witli these matches.

Faster Tournament—Our club was represented in the' very successful tournament carried out nt lister, and the following prir.es were won:—Pairs: J, Mitchell and Tlios. llerron; l'htenix rip.ks, ,1. 10. Broad's rink (vrith AV. Aikenhead's rink as runners-up); Mcadowbank rinks, J. Cablets rink gained secc-nd prize. Ground— The greens and surroundings are in capital order, notwithstanding that, ' through unforeseen circumstances, three different caretakers were engaged during the season, all of wlioni carried out their duties satisfactorily.

Valedictory,—Our genial member, Mr Gavin McGliie, who was transferred to Dunedin after a long residence in Oamaru, was tendered a farewell -ro.-ial and presented with suitable meaentors from the members with best wishes for his future welfare,

Tliankr, —To the ladies who superintended the afternoon tea we tender our grateful thanks, and in appreciation of the good services rendered n- complimentary foeial was arranged at the close of the season, The members and their lady friends turned out in large numbers, and a very pleasant eveining was spent with cards and music, To the press for the publicity given to bowling generally, and to all who in any way assisted the club we would express our thanks.

Obituary,—Our late respected member, Mr S, M. Carter, was called to his final rest after a short illness; the wife cf our former president, Mr W, ll.Westphal, also passed away; and Frank Jones, late son cf our esteemed member, Hon, Geo, Jones, made tho supreme sacrifice for his King and country. To their relatives we extend our sincere sympathy.

Conclusion.—Your committee express the hope that the great war now raging vri'l be speedily brought to a close and a glorious victory achieved by our gallant Army and Navy and their allies. Wishing the incoming committee a successful season, and trusting that the same amicable relations which have hereto existed will continue to be a feature of the club,
