Mr Win. Kininmont, Incholme, has been appointed a Justice of the Peace, and lias Liken the customary .oaths before Mr J, R. Bartholomew, S.M.
Word was received yesterday by Mrs A, E. Atkinson or Ouse street that Iter eon Sergeant W. Atkinson,, had been wounded in France and had been admitted to the Walton-on-Thaines Hospital on June 20th, suffering, from a hunshot wound in the right hand. Se«pt Atkinson, who left New ZealaiicuTn the, Ninth Reinforcements, arrived in Egypt just before the Expeditionary Porta sailed for France. He has been in Europe during the whole tinio t|io New Zealanders have been, on. the West Front, and the present is the iirst occasion on which he has been reported wounded, Sergeant Atkinson was very well-known, having been prominently associated with the various sports clubs of Oamaru. Prior to enlistment he was Mgajjed with Messrs J. and T. Meet, o? Oamaru.
A Waimate message states that Mr Morgan O'Brien, who for the past seven years has been licensee of the Waimate Hotel, who is about to leave Waimate to reside in Christehurcli, received a hearty send-off at a social function in his honour last evening, by representatives of the racing club and A. and P, Association, Caledonian Society, and representative business gentlemen. The chairman, Mr 1). A. Fulton (president of the Caledonian Society), on behalf of those present, presented Mr O'Brien with a gold locket pendant, engraved and set in emeralds, a gold bangle for Mrs O'Brien, and a purse of sovereigns for his three children. Mr O'Brien received a signal testimony of his genial popularity. The hotel staff also presented Mrs and Mr O'Brien with a dressing casii and a silver shaving set respectively.
