MARINE OFFICERS AND SERVICE,

To-day the Second Military Service Board gave a decision in tlio appeals on bolialf of the marine engineers of the Union Company. The chairman said: ( 'Wc have considered the possibility of replacing these men by qualified men now on shore/ but aro satisfied that it cannot be done. The decision of the board is that in all cases of marine onginoers above the sixth grade and ships' officers above the fourth grade, whether appeals are lodged by the employing companies or by the men themselves, appeals will bo adjourned nine die, to be renewed again before the First Division is exhausted, the employing companies undertaking to at once notify the military authorities in Wellington when any men in such grades are paid off or change their present occupation," Mr Kennedy, the Union Company manager, here reminded the board that it had not dealt with his suggestion that there should bo an embargo on the enlistment of marine engineers and officers regularly employed.
