NORTH OTAGO GOLF CLUB.

OPENING OF SEASON. UNVEILING OP ROLL OF HONOUR. The North Otago Golf Club opened the season yesterday. The weather was ideal, and the links were in splendid 'Condition, A mixed foursome was played, and twenty-six. players took part. The match resulted in a tie between Mrs de Lambert and Irvine, and Mis? J. Banks and Woodward, two down.

After die match, the members gathered in the club-house, to witness the unveiling of the club's roll of honour. In the course of an earnest tribute to the members of the club who had responded to the nation's call, Dr Orbell, president of the club, said he thought it ivas a testimony to the' value of sport in British public life, that sports clubs had given so many men as volunteers to go forward and serve their 'ountry in her hour of need. The members chib who had made the supreme sacrifice for their country were among the first to enlist, and the' North Otago Golf Club Jiad not been behind other clubs in supplying its quota of men for the firing line. Sports like golf helped to koep the youth of the n a'ion wholesome in mind and sound in body, so that when a national crisis arose, they found members of golf clubs and kindred branches of sport ready to discharge their obligations to the nation as loyal and brave sons of the Homeland. He would vt'frain from individualising on the names which had won a worthy place on the club's roll of honour, bur he was sure that every member of the club would feel a thrill of pride at having been associated with their representatives in the greatest of ill games—the tight for right. They would all cherish pleasant memories of the days spent on the links with the gallant men and self-sacrificing women who had so honourably served their country during the period of the great war. The women who were serving, the men who were fighting, and the men who had fallen, needed no eulogy, The'r deeds spoke for them, and while the recording of their names on the dub's roll of honour was not needed to keep their memory green amongst the present members, of the club, the club felt that it wa9 fitting that future generations of golf players should have constantly before them the names of those who kept Otago Golf Club in its fit andproper place as an honourable body of sportsmen and women doing its duty in the great war. He was sure all present would wish their absent members the very best of luck and a safe and speedy homecoming. (Applause.)
