The coal shortage at Auckland is •being seriously felt in ' the shipping, lines. In connection with the matter the- New Zealand Herald says: Of the large users tho first to bo acutely affected by the shortage is I lie Northern Steamship Company, which has hail to cancel some of. its trips and postpone others. The company states that if more coal, does not come to hand soon more steamers will stop running »nextweek. One of its',vessels is bar-bound at Ngunguru. Her arrival at Auckland would relieve- the situation for the company, but only for a time, as it is at least 300 tons, short for its vessels, and very little coal is in sight. The Union Company hs sufficient coal for present requirements. A new steamer is about to be built at •Dunedin for the local coastal trade. A local syndicate has requested Mr 'H.Mcßae, naval architect, to prepare plans and specifications for a coasting steamer | to carry about 350 tons of cargo on a* light draught. The vessel will be specially designed for the carriage of live' stock, and- will have large hatches to facilitate the handling of timber cargoes, The new steamer- will be- of the composite type, and it is understood' that the steel frames and plates have already been ordered. The intention is to have the vessel built either at Dunedin or Port Chalmers,

Seamen are characteristically charitable, and further evidence of this is forthcoming in their recent response to two .urgent appeals, The Federated Seamen's Union of New Zealand issued a 'subscription list among the, members on behalf of an aged, member: at "Wellington, who had fallen on;.evil days. There; was a generous''response, no less than £lO2 cojlected, Another Hat was circula|ed'in. aid'of the wife and two children'of flnbther member who has been admitted to a mental hospital, and,up to date i6Q has been sub-, scribed. lii. both cases 'the amounts have been paid over. , ; The Northern Steamship Company

has increased the jates. for' : passage fares and' freights as from April 2. The only one , exception- is oirfreight to Te Aroha, which remains tluuame. -The reason,givon for the increase .is- the heavy additional expenditure for wages,;
