WAITAKI HIGH SCHOOL ROWING.

FINAL FOR THE WARDELL CUP,

A series of rowing races was conducted on .Saturday by the school members of the Oainnru Boating Club, the object being to decide who should be the first to have'their names engraved on the magnificent challenge cup presented to t!ii' school by Mr W. Warded-, of Christ church. The first two heats were rowed under very adverse conditions, the entrance to the harbour being so rough that the races had to be shortened somewhat. For the final heat, however, ideal conditions prevailed, and an excellently contested race was the result, Wardell's crow ultimately winning by the narrow margin of half a canvas. Additional interest was lent to the racing by the inclusion of a day-boys' crew, which, considering that all its members arc novices, put up a creditable performance. As all the members of this team will be returning to school next year, it is hoped the day boys will then be able to emulate the performance of their confreres of 1!)12, when the day-boy crew, consisting of Bob MoGimpsey (stroke), T, Creagli (.')), H, Hard (•!), ami ,1. Kibblewhite (bow), beat the boarders stroked by Hartley, with Reynolds (■"!), Warner (2), and d'A'uyergne (bow). It is interesting to record that all members of this crew have responded to Ihe Empire's call, the two strokes having made the supreme sacrifice, while three others, Ward, Reynolds and Creagli, have all been severely wounded. The following is the result of the racing:— First Heat. Morrah beat Faulkner,' after an evenly contested race, by half a length. McQuin (day boy's crew) beat.Elliot. In this race McQuin, rowing steadily, got the better of the start, and Elliot, rowing somewhat roughly, lost his slide, ami although he made plucky endeavours to recover, could not catch McQuin who rowed home a winner by a length and a half. Smith's crew and Costello's got awav well together, and after half-way. Smith drew -ahead, ultimately winning by three-quarters of a length. Wardell's crew had a bye. Second Ilcat. Smith and McQuin/t got away well together, and although they stuck to their oars gamely to the end, McQuimi's crew was hardly a match.for their more, experienced opponents who won comfortably bv over a length. Wardell and Morrah rowed a very even race, the latter leading by a bare canvass till half way, when -Wardell calling on his crew, attained pride of place, finishing ahead by half a length. Final. Wardell (stroke) Darrgh (8), Wright (2), Hardy (bow), Sutherland (cox), beat Smith (stroke), Raincy (.'!), Morrah (bow), Bridgeman (cox), An excellent start was effected close to the breakwater, and the crews raced neck and neck to the dolphin, where, through superior eoxjng, Smith's'crew had a slight lead. Wardell calling on his men managed to reduce the lead, but faulty coxing again gave Smith a lead. Wardell, who had now dropped half a length behind, quickened his stroke and his crew responding immediately, managed to overhaul Smith and pass him. on the winning post by a bare half canvas.

Tlie school wisli to thank Messrs 6, Grenfell, J, Costello and C, Holland for assistance in starting and judging the various races.
