The friends of Mr I?. Malian will tie glad to learn .that he lias returned to town and is convalescing rapidly after his.severe accident.
An Auckland' message states that Captain J. Taw, for thirty years a coastal and island 'trader, died suddenly on Saturday while on the bridge, of the steamer Gael.
The Hon. J. G. W. Aitken, M.L.C., of Wellington, has been nominated for the office of moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly by the Ashburton, Wellington,. C'Kristchurcli, Wanganui. Clutha, Southland, Nelson, Walkato, and Duucdin presbyteries.
News has been received Uy cable of the sudden death at aea of Mr Henry A. Chapman, lately associate to his father, Mr Justice, Chapman, aud for some time associate to the Chief Justice. Mr Chapman, who was somewhat indisposed, but apparently not seriously so, left for England by the Corinthic, accompanied by Jiis sister, in .September, '
A London cable message states that at the inquest 011 the body of Lieutenant G, E. Carey, a New Zealander,'it was shown that he was instructing a private in. bomb-throwing in England. The bomb exploded in the trench. Lieutenant Carey, in shielding his com-. rade, received the shrapnel' in his head I and died' in the hospital. '
It- is reported from London that Lord Lucas, of the Royal Flying Corps, who was aeroplaning over the German liijes during a high wind on Saturday, has not returned, His fate is unknown, When lie retired from the Ministry, lie joined the Flying Corps, despite the fact that lie had an artificial leg, the result of an injury sustained during the Boer War, Lord Lucas, who was forty years of age; was Under-Secretary to the War Oiiice from 1908 to 1911, and Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies in 1911.
