COMPULSORY ENLISTMENT.

STATEMENT; BY DEFENCE MINISTER. ' (Per Pross Association.) AUCKLAND, Sept. 4. Replying..to ipiestioint this evening regarding the probable dale of enrolment and the powers of compulsory enlistment mulcr the. Military Service Acl, Mr Allen said: -'Everything depends upon the rate of recruiting under the,voluntary'system. Anyoncnvho professes to know when. compulsion will be brought into operation is simply indulging in speculation, It is impossible for anyone to speak from .detailed knowledge. I have said that the Government will not introduce compulsion until somewhere about the Twentysecond Reinforcements, for the reason that we cannot get the machinery ready before then. Section 35, dealing with families, would be brought into operation when the enrolment of the first division is completed."
