THE TONGARIRO.

SALVAGING OPERATIONS . REMOVING CARGO WITH SURF BOATS. NAPIER, Sept. 2. It. is statuil that the chances of the salvage of that portion of the cargo above'water on the Tongnriro are gOOil ■ should the weather remain calm, The j Konlimiii is at present at the scene of [ the wreck, and the Te Aroha leaves fcM iln-re. to-night, talcing winches ami theW necessary equipment. The trouble is that all the cargo will have to lie taken oft' bv surf, bonis, as the coastal vessels cannot be taken alongside with safety. Several Masterton firms have goods on the Tnngarirn (says the Wairarapa Times), Messrs Hugo and Shearer have over £IOOO worth of drapery on board. *

LATER PARTICULARS. (Per Press AsForintion.) NAPIER, September 4, Reliable advice has reached Napier concerning Hie position of the Tongatiro. The cargo can be salved at low tide, but at high' tide occasionally Hie heavy swell' prevents operations for a few honrs.,.A wind from the north quarter since the wreck has prevented the vessel from breaking up. A fair amount of cargo has been removed. Another big crack has appeared in the vessel, and salvage of the hull is hopeless. Captain Plunkett, Lloyds' surveyor, inspected the wreck to-day.

■WATEHSTDEHS' GRIEVANCE. (Per Press Association,) WELLINGTON, September 4.
