This is duo to the spelt of broken weather experienced, which has to some extent hindered outdoor work, The building trades remain much the same as last month, Carpcntcry and joinery is quiet, the plumbing trade is still keeping busy, while the painting remains quiet, The local woollen mill remains busy, but no (overtime has been worked, The boot repairing trade is busy, the tailoring trade is much quieter, Retailers generally report fair business. The spring weather now prevailing will no doubt have a good etrect both on outdoor work and business generally,

Building Trades—Stonemasons, quiet, Carpentery and joinery, quiet, but all hands employed. Plumbing ami gash'tting busy, Painting, very quiet; improvement expected with line weather at hand.

Woodworking Trades—Cabinetmakina and upholstery, steady, all hands en> ployed. Wood-turning, very quiet. Sash and door factories, quiet, fallingoff as compared with corresponding period of last year, Sawmilling, quiet Engineering Trade—Very quiet. Leather Trades—Boot repairs, busy, Saddlery and harness-making remains quiet.

Dressmaking and Millinery—Busy, all hands employed; two new factories "have commenced operations. Shirt-making—Fair. Tailoring (orders)— Very quiet; short time is being worked; 'this trade is much affected by the war,

Woollen Milling—Busy, working to full capacity.

_ Retail Trades—Clothing and mereerv fair, but 011 the quiet side; boot anil shoe, dealers report fair business. Drapery good; new season's goods now opened up, and an improvement is shown on corresponding perior of previous year, (irocery,' steady. Hardwire, fair. Printing and Book-binding—Steady. Couch-building—Quiet, but improving'. . Cycle and Mb lor Trades—Cycle trade has hrighlencd up during the latter pari of the period, and is now reported busy, Motor trades, fair. Agricultural Operations—Fanning; quiet; very applications for labour are. being received. Miscellaneous Flour-milling, busy. Bacuii-ciiriug quid,; shortage of supplies. Unskilled Laboiir-Diiring the month one single man and six married men with dependants applied for work. Two of the married men were sent to private employment in the countrv.
