Mr Hammond, of Briscoe and Co., Christchurch, has received word that his brother, Major H. H. Hammond, has been missing since August 9 (says the Press)., Major '-Hammond is a single man, about 85' years of age. He is a son of Mr and Mrs J. W. Hammond, of Leeston, ami was captain of the Ellesmere Mounted Rifles. When war broke out lie was On Mr Ctande Coe's sheep station iif Waiau, and immediately volunteered, going out as captain of the Bth South Canterbury Mounted Rifles. He was thrice wounded at Gallipoli and finally invalided to* England. He was promoted Major.-for his services, and has since been through the Egyptian fighting, and has evidently been missing since the Katia action; Major Hammond was a keen cricketer, and a good all-round athlete. . Captain T. H, Kinder, . Captain Thomas Henry Kinder, reported killed on July ;ird was the,second son of Mr and Mrs Henry Kinder, of lArney Road. Remuera, and was 24 years of age. He was educated at King's College, Auckland, and at Wanganui Collegiate School, where lie gained a high reputation in the athletic field, winning a number of challenge cups. He was a lirst-class rifle shot, holding the challenge cup for two years in succession, He was head prefect of the school in 1911-12. Oh leaving Wanganui he went to Cain's College, Cambridge, to continue his'studies. . He had taken the first haß' .of his degree when war broke out, and he immediately enlisted, gaining a commission in the 7th Suffolk Regiment. After being in the trenches for some time, he was invalided to England, having contracted scarlet fever. On becoming convalescent he was engaged oil home defence until M,arch of this year, when he again left for the front. He was promoted captain on the field in June last. 'His father and mother are at present in England on a visit. Captain Kinder's elder brother is serving ill the' submarine service, <> Captain 0. H: Wood,' ' Captain G. H. Wood, 1 of St. Andrews, Canterbury, whose death from wounds was reported recently was an oflicer who had both medical and nautical qualifications. Formerly he. was at sea, as air oflicer of the Shaw-Savill steamers, and held the position of a captain in the Royal Naval Reserve. Then he studied for the medical profession, and became a skilful 'surgeon, For some years prior to'his enlistment he practised as a surgeon at St, Andrew's, and was highly respected by all classes of the community, his devotion to the public in travelling long distances for the relief of the suffering earning for him a high place in the gratitude of the people of.the district. His friends in Auckland express their belief that, from their knowledge of the man, lie' has probably fallen while engaged in souk self-denying work as a medical man at the front. • . Lieutenant W, Pi Forde. Lieutenant Walter P. Forde, killed | in action, wiis twenty-eight years'of age. He was born in East Invercargill, and was (lie son of the late .lames Burke Forde and Mrs Houoria Forde, of Waikiwi, and brother of Mr M. J. Forde, of the Southland Times literary staff. He received his.commission after the evacuation..of Gallipoli, 'He was educated in the Waikiwi and M'arist Brothers' schools, and for a time was on the clerical staff of Messrs'Macalisister Bros., solicitors, Subsequently lie entered the service of Mr T.D.v.Mof-' fatt, ami at the time of his enlistment was with.Mr R. P. Meek, land agent.! In Southland- he gained distinction both football and cricket fields, and his line sporting spirit- made him a general favourite not only amongst participants but also with followers of those games. When a member of the Marist Brothers'• Club'.he represented Southland in school football, and-'gained his rep. cap as an adult' player when, a member.of the Waikiwi Club. He was captain of the Waikiwi .Cricket" Club I for several''terms, and a leading mem-1 bcr of the Invercargill Rowing Club for a. number of years, representing it in races at different regattas, Lieutenant E. P. Coady. Lieutenant E. P. Coady, late Assistant Director of Defence Stores, Wellington, has, according to advice received last week, been killed in action. He left New Zealand at the beginning of the war as a member of the Main Body, and subsequently returned and joined the Australian Forces, leaving for the front with an Australian draft some months ago. He was a well known figure in football and rowing circles, Deceased was'a single man, His mother resides in Wellington. Private C. T; Carr. Pi'ivate ('. T. Carr, killed in action, was the son of Mrs ,1. Carr. of Hall's Avenue, Remiiera, and of the late Mr E. C. Carr. He was-born at Aratapu. Northern Wairoa, and was 2S years of age. He attended the primary school at Kaiikapiikapa, and later entered the Grammar School as a scholarship pupil, After two years there lie went farming at Waiuliii. juhl later accepted a position of Mr W. Penny's 'stud farm at Masterton. where he was engaged up to the lime of his enlistment. Private .' Can- took an int'eresf in cycling and won several'trophies. He was also-«•-foot-'bailer. Trooper D, L, Small, Tropur Daniel L.. Small (reported killed in action) was the lifth son of Mrs l\. Small, of Fairlie, and was born and educated in Fairlie. lie was for some lime employed in that district.
