PRICE OF BUTTER.
INOREABE OF. ONE PENNY PER POUND.; WELLINGTON, August 11. Considerable comment has been pro' Voked locally' by a rise of one penny per pound in the price of butter. Butter is now Is Sd per p.ouild. Mailers state that it has been risen on them, and they have passed on the increase to' the public. The retailers now pay Is 6d for the butter, The manager of a big city business says that on these figures, the concern is losing by. handling butter., - There is, he argues, a nominal margin of twopence for the retailer to work on, but the discount on monthly accounts reduces the margin to. Hd, and the discount for cash reduces it to Id,, which, he declares, represents'a surplus so small that it does not cover expenses and is in fact a dead loss The Prims Minister stated fofday that Jie. had instructed the Board of Trade to deal with the <mestiou Inimo.. diately,' The board would investigate whether the recent riso was justified ami whether a breach of the' Commercial Trusts Act has been committed.,
