The North Otago Queen Committee, in securing .the services'.of Mr John Clegg, of Maori Hill, to give a lecture on 'his..experiences while- a prisoner, have done a good stroke of business. Mr Clegg was a passenger on board the "Indian Prince" when she-was stink by the "Kronz Prinz AVillielm.'' His story is told in a line, easy, racy style, interspersed with the saying salt, of humour. Mr Clegg has already given a number of lectures, at which he carried his audience with him..His graphic account,' of what the wax means is estcremly interesting. The North Otago funds should be materially iaugiiicnted .by Mr Clegg's generous help. -

The Kakanui concert, which takes place on Tuesday, 6th August, is to be run on lines which are bound to ensure good patronage, The Committee is now engaged in' arranging a comprehensive programme, which will- include a number of items of a highly interesting nature. ', '■'.-'.,.

The Queen's office advises that the response to Die "Limerick" Competitions is exceeding anticipations, though, of course, it is impossible to ascertain the quality of the-Limericks forwarded, it is understood that a great number (show originality and aptness.

■'flic position occupied by the Queen candidate for NorthOtago carries with it many onerous.duties. North Otago is a big district, and it.is no light-task to. make a point, of being present at each concert iii the .various centres. Especially is. this so. under .winter coudi : tions. This Mrs J...Cowie Nichols has cheerfully and ungrudgingly undertaken. Her devotion, to the, claims of the position is thoroughly' deserving, of the whole-hearted. and, loyal .appreciation which her suqjccts. voice when! they sing "Jor she's a golly good fellow."

A special meed of praise is deserved by those ladies of Duutroon who were responsible for making" the stage look so vomfortable on Hie occasion of the recent concert. .: Ladies who assisted in decorating the stage were Mcsdainos Scoular, Pryor, tallentire, Buttrriy, and others. "■'.'.'

A feature' of the Gaily wog stall today (Saturday) will be the sliccp-'giicss : ing competition.' This sheep (presented by.MY A. Gilchrist, of KiaOra), is reported to be the prime fat sheep ,of. the district, for this year. ./ ",... '- : ; ''- •'■..'. CONCERT AT HAMPDEN. A SUCCESSFUL FUOTON.
