The manufacture ot vermilion, which is ono of the foremost industries of Hongkong, and entirelj in the hands of the Chinese, is very ancient, They made artificial cinnabar (a form of mercury, the base of vermilion) long before Europe wbb civilised and some of the granite stones between which the pulverised ore is ground are almost prehistoric, Even in the present day there are trade secrets in the industry which no European has been able to fathom. There aro over one hundred of these manufacturing plants in Hoogkong and KowJoon. *
