An Englishman wio was in the company of an Irishman, thinking to take a rise out of him, said :- "Pat, I will give you eight'npence (eight in pence) for a shilling." . Pat thought for a moment, then, diving his hand in his trousers pocket, produced the required shilling. At the. Game time the Englishman slipped eightpence Into Pat's hand, saying :-

"'Not bad, is it?" ' "No," replied Patj "but the shilling is."

"Isn't that a heavenly little dog?' exclaimed, a gushing young lady. "Well," replied her companion, "it's certainly a Skye terrier!"

Unfortunately it generally happens that a man is thrown on his own resources at the' time when he hasn't any.
