FAMOUS RACEHORSES.

The racing season ol 1908 in England, which concluded at Manchester, once again saw the English Turl in possession ot an animal who promises to go through his career with n reasonable chance of never being beaten. This flyer, who belongs, to Hie wealthy brewer, Mr. W. Ilass, is named ISayardo, and is a son of Hay Hotrnld, who won the City and Suburban some years ago. The first undefeated horse of whom we have any record was the- redoubtable I'lciipso, who in all his racing career won £l9,ollo—a big haul in those days-nnil he lived for twenty-six years to see children of his children -in number 344—carry off in states the princely sum o! £160,000, Kclipse whs fnalcd during; the great eclipse of 1764, and thus got his name Highflyer never had his colours towered but once, and then his owner claimed for a foul. Victorious was another who never knew defeat. The chronicler of this horse's history tells us quaintly how "Victorious was never beat, unit won eight. £">(> prizes in one year, a thin? not known before." Ormonde, & s is well known, was never beaten on a public racecourse. He ran in sevenled) races, winning the lute Duke of Westminster a huge sum in stakes, si lid then! was n loud outcry when he \mis oniled to Argentina at the then record price of £28,000. Common was beaten once in his short career on the. Turf by that good, but bad-tempered, horse Sui'cfoot. Tsinglass, who some maintain to have been the best of any age, had his lolours lowered but once-by Kaoburn v-ho has nothing like the equal of Isin.lass; but the latter had been "hard nl, it," whereas Kaeburn had cnioyed a long rest. Kincsem won lii'iy races in succession, and was never once beaten. La Flcche, it is said bv those who should know, ought never lo have been beaten; nild, coming down to a more recent dale, the admirers of those two beautiful mares Sceptre and Pretty I'ollv claim the same distinction for them. The late Duke of Westminster came very near o.wning a second unbeaten horse in Flying Fox, who only suffered defeat once, but he never ran after three years of age. Perhaps, however, all things considered, (he most famous racehorse the world has ever known was the Duke of Portland's St. Simon, who died this year.
