The singing of "For they are jolly good fellows" and three hearty cheers Oon-:| eluded a most enjoyable little duty, ] Mr Findlay, with a tin of lollies,-created ] ho small fun and amusement outofdoors with the young folks, who seeiiied to fully enjoy themselves. The school broke up - afterwards} for a week, during which Mr Gilmouf will. change his gay ( bachelor estate for the staid and stately state of matrimony, i All here wish him joy In the interesting event. : Another most enjoyable affair took' place in the schoolroom in the evening, the gathering being for the purpose of

saying farewell to Miss Gilmour and Mr J. P. Gilmour, who have been re-,' siding in this district for a considerable time. The school was filled and a pro- : gressive euchre tournament was the' leading feature of the evening. The ' winners of the tournament ' were Mr J.' JSaikie (n games)and Miss L. Smart (9 games). Booby prizes were also 1 presented to the lowest scorers on either side. These were won by Miss Haan and Mr E, Carlson. - After the ' tourney refreshments were handed round and the good things provided were greatly enjoyed. Musicial ; ileitis were also given, those contributing, be- 1 ing":—Mr D, M'lnness, solo, "The old soldier"; Miss Gilmour, solo, "Flight of Ages"; Miss May Ardagh, solo, "Queen of the Earth"; Miss Findlay, pianoforte solo. The room being cleared, a start was made with the dancing, and this was kept.going, steadily till 2 a.m., when the last dance was called. The music was supplied ; by Miss Park, and Mr George Park, , while the duties of the M.C. were : entrusted to Mr D. Williams. The : greatest credit is due to the originators of this little event, as it'proved most enjoyable, and special mention must be made of the ladies who attended to the refreshments, Mrs A. A, Hood and Mfts Park, assisted by Messrs Fleming" and Park, to whom must be ascribed 1 the success of the event. ; The singing of "Auld Lang Syne" and a proposition of thanks to the originators by Mr Archie Blackwood, with three ringing '

cheers, concluded this happy and memorable event. Miss Gilmour and Mr J. P. Gilmour leave here on Monday for the north, and the good wishes of all their friends accompany them.

I regret to record the death of Paniwera Teururalti, a Maori lady of advanced age, who died at the Waitaki kaik yesterday morning.' Deceased, who was the eldest daughter of Edward Weller, Esq., of Maitland, New South Wales, and a member of the NgaWaitahi, Nga-Mamoe, Ngai-Tahu, and Ngai-ai-Terua-hiki-hiki, was married to Teoni Teururaki, and leaves him one

son and three daughters,... The son is a well-known and popular young man about this district, being in great requisition at gatherings for his step-dan-cing. The deceased rangitira was highly esteemed by the people of her tribe,, and was also greatly respected by her pakeha friends, not only on

account o( her high descent, but for her gentle, lovable nature. It goes without saying' that her voice and: counsel will be sadly missed, her, advice being sought on.all, matters of

moment appertaining to her people'. Preparations for the tahgi are now baing made, and representatives from the various kaikas of the Wai-Poiumu. are expected shortly. The Glenavy Rifle Olub have decided to hold a social on July 13th, and most complete arrangements are being made with the view of making it the event of the season. The Committee

entrusted with the carrying out of the details are a willing lot, ; and-given a fine night a most enjoyable outing will result.' On the day »f the funeral of

the late Premier the Club paraded, under Captain Williams, who, in a brief

address, eulogised, the. statesman as a hero, and spoke of his high courage and example. • Volleys were fired at

about the time of the interment as a

mark of respect to our late leader and

Defence Minister.

The weather, which has been splen did for the past week or two,' broke up on Sunday, when heavy rain fell, accompanied by a blustering sou'-easter. Provided we do not get too much of it the rain will do good in many respects. 1 Building on Steward.. Settlement Js progressing steadily, and no doubt'our neighbors "over, the -water" will be comfortably installed.'in, their new homes in due time. \ k-
