The latest addition to the combii nations of workers, the New Zealand , Federated Typographical Associa--1 lion, has just been registered undei ■ the Industrial Conciliation and Arbi- ■ tration Act. The Association will represent between six hundred and seven/hundred compositors, in the dilicrent branches of the. printing trade, and will have for its objects the obtaining of uniform awards undei'. which its members will deavoring, where possible, to come to terms with employers without having recourse to Arbitration Court proceedings. It is hoped that the system ot working will be simplified, and instead of having two, ami . in some cases 'three, difieient awards and industrial agreements in [orcein the colony, that one award or agreement wil, be obtained, covering' all sections of the trade. The headquarters of the Association. for the current year will be Cbristchurch, the Board of Management of the Canterbury .Typographical Union acting as executive. The Waipawa correspondent of tbe Ilawkes Bay Herald writes as follows in Tuesday's issue: " Tikoliino. was the scene ol the ariest 011 Sunday morning of-that 1 rarity in New Zealand, an armed burglar. For a long time past Mr E. 0. Roacli, who keeps a store at Tikoliino, has missed things. Every effort was made to trace the missing goods and to determine how, they were removed and many a weary night's watching lias been done without result. On Saturday evening Constable Raynes went to Tikok'ino and was admitted into the store, where he remained. At about 3 o'clock in the morning, Constable Raynes and Mr Roa'ch heard sounds, and suddenly tire back door was opened ami a man entered. ; He was armed with a revolver. As the intruder advanced into the store the watchers made a • move to capture him. On being called upon to surrender the man made a dash and shut himself-in an office. He was quickly followed, the door was burst in, and after a'slipt had been fired over his head, lie was rushed ami soon handcuffed! Mr Roach identified the man as John Mathcson, who is well-known in Tikoliino. On Monday morning Mathcson made his appearance at Waipawa before Mr M. Murray, J.l'., charged wi th unlawfully "breaking and entering' Roach's store at 'lMkokino with intent to commit a crime,: and was remanded to appear at Napier, The accused, it is' stated, was formerly a member of. the New Zealand police, hut-was discharged from the force in consequence of evidence given at the cnqiuiry into the Dunediii police scandal, held some time ago.
