EXTINCTION. —*_ Of the rare and strange animals now inhabiting the earth the thyla:ines of Tasmania, commonly known ;is the Tasmania!) wolf, are among Lite most singular in npirearancc and nibits. They have been almost excrininated. if not quite, by Tasmania sheep farmers, whose folds they ■•a vage. They are represented in the Zoological Wardens in London by a ■ingle living specimen. The thylacine looks like a cross beween a wolf and a hyena, but it ins tiger-like stripes on 'its back and lind (pianers, and belongs to the inirsiipials, like the kangaroo. Hut vhcreas the kangaroo feeds on vegeables. the thylacine is carnivorous. iVhen Europeans lirsl settled in Tasiianian Ihylacines were very common n the rocky and mountainous disricis, but they are not now found n any other part of the world.
