Gray (champion in 1897) third, The competitors numbered M- which is somewhat below the average during the past ,20 years. The match has been won twice only by the same man-T. Hannah (with the swing plough) in 1883 and 1885 and D. M'Farlane in 1893 and 1895. The weather was beautifully fine tor the match. NAPIER. August 5. An association, to bo called the Hawkes Bay Employers' Association, was formed here to-day. AUCKLAND. l : August 5. . An important appeal case caino before Judge Conolly, when the truant officer to the Auckland Education Board appealed against tho decision of the justices of tho peace in a case in which tho defendant pleaded guilty to a bretch of tho School Attendance Act in not sending a boy to school, and in which tho justices dismissed the case on the ground that the oQ'etco was a trivial one. His Honor said the facts seem to bo adI mitted, the defendant pleaded guilty, and the case was dismissed by the justices under section 87 of ' the Justices of the Peace Act, on tho grouud that the offence was trivial. They should not have accepted' the plea of guilty, but should have heard the case. Mr Heed, for the appellant, said that this caso was taken from a number of cases similarly decided on the same day, His Honor allowed the appeal, and ordered the case to go back to the justices, ex- ] pressing the opinion that the minimum penalty be inflisted.

The Chief Justice reserved his decision in the caso in which tho late licensee of tho Hotel Metropolc, St, Clair,.sought an order from tho Court to. compel the Caversham Licensing Committee to grant a license, the contention being that the committee had refuse! the license, thinking, because it was endorsed, they had no power to grant it. The dredgemaster of tho Hartley and Riley dredge reports a return of 389' ounces.
CHItISTCHUKCH. August 5. 'A. lad was taken to the hospital yesterday suffering from a severe cut in the groin. As his condition was serious to-day, his depositions were 'taken, He stated that he had been washing .himself, and his mother asked him to go on an ovrand. Argument ensued, and the boy told his mother to " Shut up." Sho then threw a carving knife, inflicting severe injuries. The patient's- condition was improved this ovening.
