OTEPOPO ATHENE UM CONCERT. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

The Athentcum Committee was favored with beautiful weather fcr its concert on Friday night. The president (Mr Fower aker) occupied the chair. For some time past the Athenreum performances have not met with the support that their merits and their object deserve, but Friday's attendance proved that the turning point had come. The hall was well filled by fin enthusiastic audience. All the performers were in good voice, and the singing of Misses Lawson and Schuack and Messrs Potter and George merited the warm applause vvith which ench of their items was received. The instrumental parts of the programme were equally well supplied by Miss Hood and Mr Kemshed, snd just as favorably noticed Mr Halley gave two descriptive recitations, for which he was deservedly applauded. The novelties provided wero the laughable songs, dances, i and antics of Mr Avery, the song with children's chorus by Mrs Frame, and the club and tumbling exercises of the Oamaru Gymnastic Club. If the saying "Laugh, and grow f.it " be true, then \Jr Avery will certainly be responsible tor a great increase of weight in Otepopo. Mrs Frame's song, with the refrain sung by children in the ante-room, was listened to with rapt attention. The club swinging of the Gymnastic Club, to waltz accompaniment by Messrs Forrester and Kemshed, was a revelation to the audience, and gave s good idea of the meritorious work that is being done by the Oamaru Gymnastic Club. Owing to the limited stage accommodation only half the number of gymnasts were able to perform at a time. The responsible position of accompanying the performers was ably filled by Misses Hood and Lawson, and Mepsrs Forrester and Kemshed At the conclusion of the concert dancing was indulged in for some hours to music supplied by Messrs Gillespie and Wilson.
