HAMPDEN. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
The annual concerb and dance in aH of the funds of the IJampden School was hold on Tuesday evening. The e was nob the usual large attendance, for which school concer e *b Hampden are famous The oett proceeds will, I believe, only amount t^ about Lll. The programme subinibbed was excellent, and deserved a larger audience. The chairman of the committee (Mr Nicolson) was in the chair, and in a few well chosen remarks stated the object of the concert, The programme consisbed of violin and pianoforbe duets by Misses Briefer and M Kechnie, songB by Misses Bridajer, M'Kechnie, Booth, M'Lellan, M'Cormack and Carmlchsel, and Messrs Hosie Findlay, Jone3 and Keddell, the last named gentleman (Mr Keddell) being first-class in his comic songs. The concert concluded with a kinderspiel Ly the school children " The L^sb of the Fairies," and a maypole dance, with both of which Mrs Wabb must have gone to a great deal of trouble to make the children so profficent. Ab the conclusion of the concert Mr Murcotb proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the performers from Dunedin, Palmeratonj and the local balenb. Mr M Kerrow proposed a vote of | thaoks to the Chairman, and in doing j so said that he travelled to a great miny places in Otago, and he must give Hampden the credib cf being the second beet kepb school and school grounds in Oago, and this was in » greab measure owing to the energy of the Chairman. The hall was then cleared for dancing, which was kepb up with spirib f*r into the small hoars. Mr D. Howie acted as M.C , and Messrs ob. Clair (piano), Donaldson and Cormask (violins), and Booth (piccolo) supplied excellenb music, The native band are giving a concert ia Hampden on Saturday, 16th The band are camping in Hampden for their Easter holidays, and bhe Hampden people are looking forward to a musical breat on Saturday evenIDg. Threshing is now almost finished, and the crops are turning out better than was expected. There will be about double the area in crop this ensuing year in this district.
