OAMARU BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the above Council was held last evening, when there were present : The Mayor (Mr H. Aitken), and Councillors Cagney, Brown, Meek, Hedley, Hamilton, and Taylor. The minutes were read and confirmed. The Timaru Borough Council asked for information regarding water meters — whether m use, and what prico was charged for water, The necessary information had been supplied. The School Commissioners of Otago wrote agreeing to the terms proposed for land taken from sections 32, 33 and 34, block 13, Oamaru district. The Council could have 3 acres and 24 perches for L 6 per acre cash and the payment of 6s per aore per annum for 13 years, and the 1 acre 3 roods 10 perches, occupied by tunnel, for L 3 per acre caah, provided that the surface of the tunnel area is not conveyed to the Council. Other conditions were imposed. Ib was resolved that tho matter be handed over to the Council's solicitors for the preparation of the necessary deeds. The matter of charitable aid, which was referred to by the Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, was again brought up and deferred. Messrs Landrebe and Parsons, Pukeuri, offered to do necessary work at the Italian tunnel at a stipulated price. — Received. Mr Thomas Stewart offered Ll per year for tbe right of grazing on section 22, block 91 — The offer waa accepted. The Mayor said that on the suggestion of Sergeant O'Grady the street lamps had been lit ou the night of Friday, the 4th (night of the election). Mr David Grant wrotedrawing the Council's attention to the nuisance existing at the north end of the town by the deposit of night soil on the beach. The practice i was a most ofien a ive one, and had beside a depreciatory effect on property. He suggested that the nighb soil be deposited on the Sandy Beach, to which place there was a good road. It was generally agreed that there was some ground for the complaint. The matter was referred to the Works Committee, to reporb at next meeting. The following building applications were granted : A. Weir, building on sections 1, 2, 21, 22, block 35 ; Lawn Tennis Club, building on section 8, block 43 ; J. M. Forrester (for Messrs Shrimski and Moss), additions to shop, The Finance Committee recommended the payment of accounts amounting to LlO6 lis 9d. -Adopted. Mr Brown, as chairman of the Works Committee, reported that the Engineer and two members of the Committee had investigated Mr A. Young's complaint c drainage flowing on to his property. The recommended that part of the streeb be filled up, and the channel laid m concrete. The work would cost from L24 to L 25. The nuisance was a very bad one, and should be abated. It was decided that the work be done, It was decided to hold the next meeting of the Council on Friday, the Bth of January. The Council then rose. I
