TELL ME WHY.
I TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I enclose bhree cablings from last night's Mail. Two are adverbisemenbs from two respectable business firms, and the other is the finish of an article that appeared from the pen of the editor — the same gentleman thab was ab Mrlsitt's meeting last Friday, sitting next to Mr Dewdney, applauding the lecturer to the very echo. Would you kindly publish them m your paper just to show your temperance readers bhe abominable inconsistency of the editor of the Oamarn Mail m " setting his sails to catch the favoring breeze," m advertising whisky on the one band and running lb down on the other. — I am, etc., Consistency, j The following are the clippings : " Highland Whisky. • Inspiring bold ; John Barleycorn, whab dangers thou I can'sb make us scorn.' Just landed, ex \ Auckland, the first shipmenb of Robbie Bums brand, the very cream of Highland Whiskies, m wood and bobtle, selected by myself while m Scobland. P. is sole agent for the above fi rm, and has now m stock quarters, octaves, and cases, all of the very best. A trial will satisfy everyone thafc ifc cannot be beaten." "We wish fco say thab our anbagonlsm is nob bo those engjjged In bhe traffic, bub to the evils of the traffic. We may be as singular m our views on this subjecb as we have been m regard to other subjects ; but, we are convinced thab, for economic, social, and physiological reasons, it is the duty of every journaltab to do his utmosb to sbamp oub the drink curse, arid we are going bo help m the achievement of this objecb." - [Our corresponded does not say which are the advertisements and which is tho "finish of the editorial." We would, therefore, like to ascertain whether our local contemporary has taken up the agency of Dewar's whisky, or is afc the presenb bime revelling m the profits from the Robbie Burns brand, and trying to draw sustenance from thab " Insp ; rlng bold John Birleycorn ; what dangers bhoa can'sb make us scorn." — Ed.]
