WELLINGTON.
June 29. The general manager of the National Bank has received a cable stating that the directors have declared a dividend of 5 per cent, placed L 20,000 to the reserve fund, and carry forward L 4500. The bankruptcy returns lor the past six months show that 45 statements were tiled against 25 for a similar period of last year. A private cablo announces the sudden death m Melbourno of Mr J. Jaques Martin, general manager and founder of tho Colonial Mutual Life. Mr Martin was a resident of tho colony m his early days During the examination of Mr Ivippenberger, solicitor m the Kirby case, Mr Jellicoe, who had been conferring with Sir R. Stout, spoke to the prisoner m the box, whereupon Mr Gray, who was prosecuting, asked if Mr Jellicoe was appearing m the case. Sir R. Stout intimated that Mr Jellicoe was appearing with him for the accused. Mr Gray said it was his duty to mention that he understood that Mr Jellicoe had been advising Herman prior to his appearing for the accused. It was a very wrong principle for counsel to go upon. Mr Martin said that it might be wrong, but thab he had no power to do anything m the matter. Mr Gray then intimated that he would tako occasion to bring the matter before the proper tribunal. The incident closed by Mr Jellicoe remarking that he wished it to be understood that he knew his own business, Mr Gray, notwithstanding. Mr Jellicoe is acting for Kirby m the libel case against the manager and publisher of the Times.
