Sergeant J. R. Wakelin is a watchmaker m Christchurch. He was bom at Exter, Devon, England, and is 49 years of age. At the age of 26 he joined the first volunteer corps started m England, .and was connected with it for 10 years. As a shot he has had a great career. He has been m the Queen's sixty, and finished fourteenth for the Queen's prize. He shot m the English Twenty for three 3 7 ears, was one of eight m the English volunteer team, and fired at Wimbledon m the United Service Team Match m 1879. To be chosen as one of eight m the English volunteer team was, he reckons, the greatest honor he ever had conferred upon him. Last year he came into fifth place for the Champion Belt, beating Private Winslade on the tie. He has been thirteen years m the colony, is an inveterate smoker and a moderate drinker. It is a notable coincidence that Rule and M'Gregor use tho same make of MartiniHenry rifle — bhe Webbly - Macgibbon Ideal — as Sergeanb Wakelin, through whom they obtained their rifles.
