TERRIBLE STRUGGLE WITH A LION.

A message from Zomba, dated November 21, s<»ys : "The last issue of the British Central Africa Gazet'e gives 'particulars of the death of Dr M'Kay, surgoon on board her Miijo3ty'a ship Pioneer, who wag ki led by a lion in October last. It appears that the doctor was left by the Pioneer for a few days' shoot' ng at a village near the south west coroor of Nyassa. Two days later he started with three boys to shoot elephants. After walking for some hours they cmc to a pool of water, and, seeing a lion aud a lioness a few yards distant, Dr M'Kay fired twice at the lion. He wounded ib and both animals ra >de off for the jungle. Two of Dr M'Kay 's native attendants ran away, bub the doctor and his Zanzibari boy l\lusa went in search of the wounded lion. They G9pied the beast crouching down 15 yards away, and M'Kay fired at the lion's head. At that instant the lion sprang upon the doctor with a terrific roar, and a deadly struggle took place. Dr xM'Kiy losb hold of his r.flo in endoxvoring to keep the lion off his throat) The beast seized his left nrm in its jaws and clawed his right. The doctor kicked ab the lion, which threw him down and began to tear his flpsh. He then called to Musa, ' Musa, my arm is broken ; my log is broken ; bring the rillo. ' Musa took it, and M Kay, unable to hold ib up, made Musa sit down, and, resting tho riflo on his shoulder, shot) the lion dead. A rough stretcher was made and Dr M'Kay was carried into camp. Ho suffered much and died on Oct. 2G ab 4 p.m. On thosnmo day, a littlo later, tho Pioneer roturned, to find him dead. He was taken to tho Universities' Mission Station at Likoma, and buried in tho cemetery there."
