Owing to unavoidable circumstances, ib was late before several of the players mado a start. Progroes has been made at so mo of the board?. Mr Skeeb oaptained the Oamaru team, and Mr Jaokman as umpiro looked well aftor the intorosbg of tho Timaru club. Mr Davis, tho telegraphist, got through hi» work in faultless style. Mr Clayton was unab'.o to bo presont, and his placo was takea by Mr Bolton. Tho following is a resume of Saturday evening's play : Board No. 1. — Moitsra M'Allietor (Timaru) and Bolton (O.imaru). Tho latter adopted Philidor's defence, and at) proHenb haa a good equal gamo. Board No. 2. — Messrs Francis (Oamaru) and Haseall (Timaru). Tho former abtackod with tho Bishop's opening, and succeodod in winning his opponent's Queen for a pawn and a j rook, and has a docided advantage. Board No. 3. — Messrs Clark (Timaru) and Banks (Oamaru). The Timaru playor offered the Queon'a Gambit, which the looal playor aocoptod, but got tho woreb of tho posi* tion, and at present is a pawn down. Board No. 4. — Messrs Skoeb (Oamaru) and Morris (Timaru). The former playod tho Bishop's opening, und honors are equal. Board No, 5 — Messru Wood (Timaru) and Loo (Oaraaru). The former offered the King's Gambit, which the local man declined, and tho game is slightly in favor of the Timaru playor. Board No 6. — Kov. Mr Gould (Oamaru) and Mr Dossetb (Timaru). The former played the Ruy Lopez abtaok, and has a good garao. Board No. 7.— Dr Reid (Timaru) and Mr King (Oamaru). A Giuoco Piano wag played ab this board, and tbo local man baa a good even game. Board No. 8. — Mr Burns (Oamaru) and Dr Cot (Timaru). Tho latter de« fondod with Philidor's defence, and at present bhoro in no advanbage on eibher side. Board No. 9.~-MoBsrfl M'Kibban (Timaru) and Crump (Oamaru). Another Bishop's oponing was playod »b this board, und honors stand equal. Board No. 10. — Dr de Lautour (Oarnttru)andMr Applogarth (Timaru). t'ho local player offered tho King's Knight Gambit, which was acoopbed. The local player give up a knighb and a rook, and at present has an attacking I osition. Tho play will bo continued nexb Saturday ovoning.
