CRICKET. OAM ARU v. SOUTHLAND.

On Saturday an elovon from tho 0.0. C. tried conclusions with tho Southland team, who aro on their way to play Canterbury this week. Owing to tho rather hurriod arrangomont of tho match, and to its being so early in tho season, the local team was unavoidably weak, whilo tho Southland men wero also one man short. Tho ground wan in voj:y fair condition, although tho wtckot bumped considerably at one ond. Southland winning tho toss olected to bat, and wore not disposed of until they run up 130. Tho scoring towards thin total was well distributed. Stephenson (39 not out) pl.iyed a veiy patient innings, but did not soom up to his usual form. Brown made 29 by very good allround cricket. Burnes (22) showed perhaps tho best batting for the visitors, until he was splendidly caught by Gillies. Tho other double figure scorers were Kingbland 15, Jones 10, and Gibson 10. (i, Macdonald with three wickets for 21 obtained tho best average for the O CO Tho iiolding of the loc »1 team was on tho wholo much below thoir u^ual standard. As was expected tho batting of the Ocimaru team was rather weak. Most of tho players showed very good form on starting, but unfortunately they did not worn capable of any long continued oilbrt. W. M'Donald, with 25, played very steadily for his runs, and the only other double figure score towards the total of 72 was A. Crawford with 12. Stephensou G for 28 was much the most effective bowler for the visitors. A very enjoyablo game thus ended in favor of Southland by 67 uuis As thoro is a possibility of a return match in Dunediu at Christmas O.uoaru players should devote themselves to constant pr.ietico in order to rovorso this defeat.
